arXiv.org Now Accepts Notebook Submissions
February 6, 2001--arXiv.org, the e-print server hosted by Los Alamos
National Laboratory, now accepts submissions of notebook documents. Authors
can
submit notebooks either as supplemental materials or as an entire article.
Notebooks can be created with Mathematica or Publicon, and
they can be
viewed with Mathematica, Publicon, or
MathReader.
arXiv is an electronic archive and distribution server for technical
research papers. Areas of study covered on arXiv include physics and
related disciplines, mathematics, nonlinear sciences, computational linguistics,
and neuroscience. Last year, over 30 thousand papers were submitted and an
estimated 15 million preprints were downloaded from arXiv and its
international mirror sites.
"Increasingly, researchers want to be able to use one environment both for
deriving their results and for publishing them. arXiv's capacity to accept
notebook documents is an added service for Mathematica users and
recognizes the needs of the sizable Mathematica community," said
André Kuzniarek,
Publications Production Manager at Wolfram Research.
Added Kuzniarek, "One distinct advantage of notebooks over other formats,
such as PDF, PostScript, and TeX, is that notebooks are 'live' documents
and arXiv users with access to Mathematica will be able to run the
calculations
in the document." This allows readers to replicate, compare, and further
investigate submission results, fostering a more interactive environment
for sharing work.
To ensure readability of notebook submissions for a wide audience, Wolfram
Research has established a set of file submission
guidelines to be followed when submitting
notebooks to arXiv. Additional considerations
