India Student Mathematica Competition 2008

Wolfram Research and Sierra Atlantic Software Services are pleased to announce the results of the India Student Mathematica Competition 2008.

This first-of-its-kind competition attracted some of India's most talented young mathematical minds. The six competition questions, created by Wolfram Research developers, were from a wide variety of disciplines, including pure mathematics, computer science, physics, and graphics, and highlighted the revolutionary new capabilities of Mathematica 6. Over a thousand students registered, and each received a free time-limited trial of Mathematica for Students 6 to use for the competition.

Congratulations to Vimalkumar Jeyakumar, the grand prize winner, for earning the highest total score. Vimalkumar is in his third year studying computer science and engineering at the IIT Madras. One of the Wolfram judges, Devendra Kapadia, commented, "His solutions revealed a deep understanding of mathematical and programming ideas. It was a brilliant performance." In addition to Mathematica for Students 6, Vimalkumar received a new laptop donated by Wolfram Research and Sierra Atlantic Software Services.

  • Second Place: Rohit Nagpal--IIT Kanpur, third-year M.Sc. in integrated student mathematics and scientific computing
  • Third Place: Mainak Chowdhury--IIT Kanpur, first-year B.Tech in electrical engineering
  • Joint Fourth Place (tie): Anshuman Singh--IIIT Hyderabad, second-year B.Tech in computer science and engineering; Divye Kapoor--IIT Roorkee, second-year B.Tech in computer science and engineering

Each has won a copy of Mathematica for Students 6 and assorted gifts from Wolfram Research. For more information on these talented individuals as well as their winning solutions, download the competition notebook.
