Examples: Mobile Communication

webMathematica is not limited to building sites that are accessed from a personal computer or workstation.

Because of its open design, webMathematica can also be used to design and serve web pages that use a variety of XML languages and can be accessed from other devices. The following examples demonstrate the uses of two important XML markup languages technologies for mobile devices, Wireless Markup Language (WML) and compact HTML (cHTML).

"In the years to come, people will do almost anything they want through simple appliances, hand-held devices and cellphones. And for the first time in the short history of the internet, they will not have to download software or configure devices. this means the act of tapping into the internet will become such a non-event that it will not merit mention"

WML Support

webMathematica supports WML, the XML format designed for devices that implement the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) specification, such as mobile phones and pagers.

WML pages are stored on a web server. They are accessed by a WAP gateway, which sits between mobile devices and the World Wide Web, passing pages from one to the other much like a proxy. This translates pages into a form suitable for mobiles. This process is hidden from the phone, so it may access the page in the same way as a browser accesses HTML, using a URL.

Using webMathematica technology, you can add WML into your web pages to build interactive websites for use on mobile devices.

cHTML Support

webMathematica supports cHTML, the XML format designed for i-mode phones. The i-mode technology was founded by NTT DoCoMo, one of the world's leading telecommunications companies.

The i-mode portal service provides direct access through its i-menu to email services and a wide range of content such as banking, weather forecasts, news, stock price information, telephone directories, dining and entertainment guides, online shopping, ticket reservations, and games. Each selection of content can be accessed very easily with just one touch of the i-mode button on a DoCoMo handset.

The i-mode internet service also provides access to more than 50,000 independent sites. These i-mode-compatible websites can be linked easily with the power of Mathematica by using webMathematica.
