Mathematica Student Certification Program

Give your resumé a competitive edge

Mathematica Student Certification can give student resumés the competitive edge needed in many career fields. Many businesses are looking for employees to solve problems in a quick, efficient manner, the way Mathematica users can. Students who want to demonstrate and receive recognition for their Mathematica skills are invited to take the certification test.

What does the test cover?

The certification test covers fundamental constructs, basic functions, advanced constructs and functions, advanced programming, and real-world problems. Students are expected to create and analyze commands and variables to determine errors, write programming code, and solve mathematical problems. The test also asks students to demonstrate their abilities in plotting, creating graphics, and defining functions. Specifically, the test covers Mathematica syntax, coding, and some of the more basic Mathematica functions, like Plot and Graph. Several of the questions are about how students would use Mathematica to solve the given problems. Specific topics covered include, but are not limited to, physics, trigonometry, geometry, linear algebra, and calculus.

Levels of student certification

There are two levels of student certification: Mathematica Foundations Level and Mathematica Advanced Foundations Level. To pass with a Mathematica Foundations Level certificate, you must score between 76 and 89 points. To pass with a Mathematica Advanced Foundations Level certificate, you must score 90 points or higher. The test has 108 possible points.

Test information

The test is in notebook form and administered in English. Only submitted English versions of the test will be accepted at this time. The test is only available for Mathematica 6 or higher. Students can download the test notebook after registering on this site. Once the notebook is downloaded, students have 72 hours to take the test and send it back to us for grading. Students are encouraged to answer as many questions as possible, but are not required to complete the entire test before submitting it for grading. Although the test needs to be returned to us within 72 hours, it should not take that long to complete. The Wolfram Mathematica Documentation Center is the only resource students are allowed to use for help. During the grading process, students are expected to answer real-time questions over the phone to further verify their knowledge of Mathematica.

Faculty sponsor information

In order to receive Mathematica Student Certification, each student needs to have a faculty sponsor. Each student's sponsor should be a professor at the school the student currently attends. We will contact each sponsor to verify student-status. No fees are involved for the student or the faculty sponsor.

Eligibility

Students are eligible to take the test only once per semester. To be considered a student, you must currently be enrolled in high school, college, or a graduate school program. At this time, certification is for students only. For further information about non-student learning, please visit the Wolfram Education Group website.
