What training formats are used to deliver the courses?

Our courses are offered in the following formats:

Classroom Classroom Online Online
On Demand On Demand Onsite Onsite
Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL) Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL)

Each course is presented by a Wolfram Research senior developer or a Wolfram Education Group certified instructor. Lecture and hands-on formats are used in all classes, allowing attendees to interact with the materials, other participants, and the instructor.

What are the differences between short courses and other Wolfram Education Group courses?

Short courses are three to four hours in length and are designed to cover special topics of interest to Mathematica users. They are written and taught by senior Mathematica developers and provide insight into emerging features and technologies within Mathematica. Short courses are less expensive, more narrowly focused, and are offered mostly online, providing greater flexibility in scheduling.

What is included with the course?

Each attendee is provided with a set of electronic course notes; attendees in classroom facilities will also receive print copies of the course notes. Computers running the current version of Mathematica are provided in classroom facilities for attendee use. As Mathematica is needed to run the electronic version of the course, a 30-day training version of Mathematica is available to attendees in online, BYOL, and onsite classes. Every attendee receives a certificate of course completion.

What do I need to bring to class?

For attendees at computer classroom facilities, all course materials are provided, including a computer running Mathematica for use during class. Attendees of BYOL and online classes have additional requirements. All attendees are responsible for their own travel, meals, and lodging, and photo IDs are required at some locations.

What should I bring to a BYOL class?

BYOL training events require that you bring your own laptop computer to class. Please have the current version of Mathematica installed on the laptop you will be using. If you require a Mathematica training license for your computer, please contact us. Remember to fully charge your computer battery and bring your power cord with you.

What topics are included in my class?

For the course syllabus and prerequisites for each class, see the course catalog.

What times are the classes offered?

Classes held at classroom facilities run from 9am to 5pm (local time). Online class times vary. Please see the Wolfram Education Group complete calendar for a list of currently scheduled classes and their dates and times.

How can my organization register several people for training?

You can submit individual registrations from the Wolfram Education Group complete calendar, or our Customer Service department can assist you with multiple registrations. In the U.S. or Canada, please call 1-800-WOLFRAM (965-3726). In other locations, please call +1-217-398-0700 or email your request to education@wolfram.com.

What about reimbursement from my employer?

Many employers will reimburse the costs of certified Mathematica training. Request a copy of your Wolfram invoice and your course certificate by contacting Wolfram Education Group at education@wolfram.com. Our address is Wolfram Education Group, 100 Trade Center Drive, Champaign, Illinois, 61820-7237, USA.

Can I use a purchase order to pay for my class?

Yes, purchase orders are accepted. Unless credit terms are preapproved, payment is required prior to the first day of class.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Fees paid for classroom and BYOL training are fully refundable if notice is received 15 days before the first day of class. Fees paid for online training are nonrefundable but can be applied to a different training class if there is a need to reschedule. Please see the scheduling policy information.

How does online training work?

Wolfram Education Group online classes are delivered over the internet using one of the supported web browsers on your computer with Flash Player installed. Online classes are divided into training sessions of two to four hours each. When you register for online training, you register for all of the training sessions for a particular class. Acrobat Connect Pro natively supports streaming audio and video. If your computer has a microphone and is configured to use it, you can use that to participate in class discussion; a telephone audio conference is also available should you prefer to participate via phone, with a toll-free number for callers in the U.S. and Canada.

What do I need to participate in online training?

To participate in online sessions, you need a computer and web browser with Flash Player installed and a connection to the internet. Your computer speakers or headset will deliver the audio, and you can communicate via its microphone; you will need a telephone located near your computer if you prefer to join the telephone audio conference. To participate in the course exercises, you'll need the provided courseware and a current version of Mathematica installed on your computer. Although you may be prompted to install the Acrobat Connect Add-in, it is not required for participation in online training.

Can I test my connection to the online class?

That page will report whether your version of Flash Player is supported, what your connection speed is, whether you are able to connect to our online server, and whether you have the Acrobat Connect Add-in installed. (Note: The add-in is not required for participation in Wolfram Education Group online sessions.) If you have trouble connecting, see our troubleshooting tips.

How should I prepare my computer for online or BYOL training?

Install the courseware and a current version of Mathematica prior to your class. A courseware download consisting of Mathematica notebooks and packages is included with your training registration, and a free 30-day Mathematica training version is available upon request. For online classes you will also need to have Flash Player and a supported web browser installed on your computer. See the computer requirements for details.

After I register for online training, how do I join my class?

Prior to your class you will be sent a URL that takes you to the online classroom. Select "Enter as a Guest", type your name in the field provided, and click the "Enter Room" button.

What if I need to reschedule my training?

You may reschedule your registration to another class if you do so at least 15 days prior to your first training date. Less than 15 days prior to your class, a rescheduling fee may apply. Online training is nonrefundable. See the scheduling policies for additional information.

Can online training be scheduled for my group?

Yes! Online classes can be used to provide private training for your group. Save on instructor travel expenses! Find out more about onsite training.

I am having trouble connecting. How should I troubleshoot?

First, check your connection to the internet, then clear your browser's cache. Sometimes simply exiting your online session and reconnecting will allow a connection. Due to differences in browser settings, you might have success connecting from a different browser or computer.

If none of these suggestions results in a successful connection, run the connection test by clicking here. That diagnostic page reports whether your version of Flash Player is supported, what your connection speed is, whether you are able to connect to our online server, and whether you have the Acrobat Connect Add-in installed. (Note: The add-in is not required for participation in Wolfram Education Group online sessions.) If the test indicates you are ready to connect, please review the login procedure in your confirmation email and try again. If your connection test fails, see our connection test information.

I see an FMS Server error. What does that mean?

If you are unable to connect to port 1935, you may see an error report that says, "FMS Server did not return correctly!" This error indicates that your network, proxy, or firewall is blocking FMS / Flash Communication Server traffic. To connect to Wolfram Education Group online training events, you will need to open port 1935 with a destination of seminars.wolfram.com.

What can I do if my connection test fails?

Confirm your connection test results by using the IP address by clicking here.

A connection test failure could indicate that you are not connected to the internet, or that Flash port 1935 is blocked. Some networks block Flash server traffic by closing port 1935. In order to connect to Wolfram Education Group online training events, you will need to open port 1935 with a destination of seminars.wolfram.com.

What port must be open in order to connect to seminars.wolfram.com?

To connect to Wolfram Education Group online training events you will need to open port 1935 with a destination of seminars.wolfram.com, if it is not already open.

Why do I receive no reply to my reset password request?

Your request to reset your password will fail if you do not have an active login account on the seminars server. Note that a new seminars server was installed in June 2008, and account information created before that date is no longer recognized. If you have not received an email in response to your reset password request, you will need to create a new account. You will only have to do this once. Go to the seminar registration page, and enter your information as if you are first-time user. You will need to enter your email address, a password of your choice, your first and last name, and all other required information. You will be directed to a registration thank-you screen, and you can expect to receive a registration confirmation email soon thereafter.
