Background

Bill Haneberg has used Mathematica on NeXT and Macintosh systems to solve research and consulting problems in geomechanics, engineering geology, and hydrogeology since 1989. Many of these solutions have been described in peer-reviewed papers and presented at major scientific meetings. Bill has also used Mathematica as a teaching tool in graduate-level classes in geomechanics. In 1999 he left a senior research position at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources to establish a consulting practice based in the Seattle area.

Slope Stability
- Derivation of first-order, second-moment expansions and Monte Carlo simulations for probabilistic analysis of the stability and reliability of forested slopes with variable pore water pressure
- Development of spatially distributed (GIS-style) methods for reconnaissance-level probabilistic slope stability analysis

- Development of first-order accurate analytical solutions for stresses and displacements in compressible elastic half-spaces with topography and variable regional states of stress (Applications of these solutions have included evaluation of the effects of valley incision on the subsurface state of stress and degree of overconsolidation in underlying clastic aquifer systems and evaluation of the influence of valley shape on modes of coal mine roof failure.)
Geophysical Log Analysis
- Nonlinear fitting of Athy and Dickinson depth-porosity curves to digital geophysical logs, which were then used to predict aquifer compressibility and specific compaction, using Helm's porosity gradient method
- Variogram calculation to characterize the spatial variability of geophysical log porosity within and among lithofacies
- Calculation of derivative geophysical logs (e.g., Young's modulus, electrical conductivity) from standard log suites
