Background
Dusan Sakulski is currently working on his Ph.D. in civil engineering at the University
of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. He has more than 17 years of experience in
geographic information systems (GIS),
mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, internet/intranet technology, disaster
management, integrated water and environmental management, and transportation
and pavement management.
Sakulski started using Mathematica in 1990 and has applied it to data transformations,
the implementation of various file-related functions for ASCII data manipulation,
querying the relational database using database access functions, on-the-fly data
visualization (2D and 3D graphs and animations), data error analysis, data smoothing,
functions and probability fitting, regression and trend analysis, time series data
manipulation and analysis, statistical calculations and analysis, scenario development
(what-if analysis),
and environmental and disaster (hazard and vulnerability) indicators development
and modeling.
Sakulsi is presently running the South African National Disaster Management Centre, where
he is responsible for scenario development
(modeling); coordination and integration of various areas of information technology
(GIS, database, and web); satellite imagery and remote sensing; and mathematical, statistical,
and optimization tools. All of his work is database driven and web enabled.
