Mathematica Trainer: Abdallah Sfeir
Educated as an aeronautical engineer in France, Abdallah Sfeir received
his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of California,
Berkeley in 1969. His research activity has centered mostly around fluid
mechanics and heat and mass transfer.
Dr. Sfeir started using Mathematica soon after Version 1 was released
10 years ago. Already familiar with other computer-assisted math
systems, he was very rapidly converted to the elegance and power of
Mathematica and progressively implemented it in his teaching and
research.
In 1989 Dr. Sfeir joined the Ecole des Mines in France where he soon became
Director of Studies (equivalent to Academic Dean). In that capacity he
initiated a course on computational mathematics using Mathematica as a
supporting language. Class notes of that course were later edited and became
Mathematica: Une nouvelle approche du calcul scientifique, a book in
French. The course material also served as a training package to
professionals and was extensively used and tested through training seminars
organized by Ritme
Informatique, a certified
Mathematica reseller in France. Dr. Sfeir is currently finishing
a second book in French, Mathematica 3: Langage et methodes.
Presently, Dr. Sfeir is Dean of the School of Engineering and Architecture at
the Lebanese American University in Byblos, Lebanon. The school is a
recent addition to the university, and students joining are trained to
use Mathematica through calculus courses and a computational math
course. Mathematica training is currently available at the university for both
students and professionals. Off-campus, in-house training in French or English
can also be arranged in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.
