Mathematica Trainer: Keehong Song

Keehong Song has been using Mathematica since its introduction in 1988. He was widely recognized as the first one to teach Mathematica and Java in a university classroom in Korea and has always been swift in introducing advanced technologies into the classroom. Representing his own philosophy as a Mathematica evangelist, he has been active in advocating the use of Mathematica through various channels including major news media.

Outside of the Department of Mathematics Education where he teaches, Dr. Song has taught various Mathematica-related courses for many departments including Mathematics, Computer Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. These courses cover programming language, probability, statistical data analysis, discrete mathematics, combinatorics, and numerical analysis. He has also given weekly lectures for university students and for professionals during the summer/winter session.

Dr. Song has served as a member of the National Scholastic Achievement Test (Korean SAT) Committee, which plays a pivotal role in setting the standards for the high school curriculum in Korea. On this committee his function was to assess the need for changes in the high school mathematics curriculum in light of the advancement in technology. In other Mathematica-related experiences, he has served in two university institutional positions as Associate Director of the Computation Center and Software Development Manager of the Science Education Center.

Dr. Song received both his B.A. in Computer Sciences and his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from The University of Texas at Austin. He taught at The University of Texas at Austin and Austin Community College and is currently an Associate Professor at Pusan National University in South Korea.

Dr. Song is starting MathC, a company that specializes in teaching mathematics and Mathematica using web technologies. His research interests include web-based education, human factors research in user interface, statistical data analysis, visualization of mathematical concepts, and algorithm animation.
