How Mathematica Is Used in Community College Education
To best equip today's community college student with the computational
skills required for future studies and careers, more and more educators
are integrating
Mathematica in the classroom. They are using it to teach everything
from algebra and trigonometry to calculus and differential equations, to
conduct distance learning courses, and to
prepare class materials, examples, demonstrations, and homework.
Georgia Perimeter
College
Throughout the Georgia Perimeter College system,
Mathematica is used by many teachers as the primary tool for
teaching calculus. With Mathematica installed in several computer labs
and classrooms and used for homework, projects, and tests, the students are
provided with a very rich Mathematica experience.
Roane State Community
College
Rebecca Howard of the Mathematics Department at Roane State Community
College won a copy of Mathematica at the AMATYC 1999
conference in Pittsburgh. Having dreamed for some time of purchasing
Mathematica, she
was very excited to receive a copy. She is using it with
honors students in her differential equations and
matrix algebra classes.
Truckee Meadows
Community
College
When Lars Jensen first arrived at Truckee Meadows
Community College, the college already had a Mathematica license.
However, it was not being used in any classes. With little resistance from
his colleagues, Mathematica was quickly incorporated into the
calculus sequence and is now used by several professors to teach calculus.
