DatabaseLink is based on the commonly used Java database connectivity (JDBC) technology; it requires no special Java programming to use.

DatabaseLink can connect to any database for which a JDBC driver is available. It comes preconfigured with drivers to connect to a number of databases. However, for licensing reasons Wolfram Research is sometimes unable to ship drivers for a database with Mathematica. Instead, users of Mathematica can download the driver and install it themselves.
