Q: How is Mathematica for Students different from the professional version of Mathematica?
Mathematica for Students is a fully functional version of Mathematica but at a low student price. It runs at the same speed, produces the same output, and is identical in functionality to the professional version of Mathematica. Its distinctions include the following:
  • Mathematica for Students is for exclusive sale to students enrolled at accredited educational institutions for use on their own personal computers. Proof of enrollment is required at the time of purchase.
  • Registration and a password are required to use Mathematica for Students. To register Mathematica for Students and to receive an activation password, students must go to the Wolfram Research product registration page or contact Wolfram Research via phone, email, fax, or postal mail.
  • Mathematica for Students has an encoded footnote that prints at the bottom of every document page. This "Printed by Mathematica for Students" footnote cannot be eliminated.

Note: Information on the technical differences between the student and professional versions of Mathematica is available on our Technical Support website.

Q: What platforms does Mathematica for Students support?
The current version of Mathematica for Students is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Q: I'm searching for a program that will show step by step how my equations are solved. Does Mathematica for Students have this capability?
Unfortunately, Mathematica will not provide step-by-step explanations for your solutions. However, a program could be written in Mathematica's high-level programming language to provide this feature.

Calculus WIZ, an interactive homework helper based on the most widely used calculus textbooks, will show you the steps for each calculus problem. Calculus WIZ is for use with Mathematica for Students and can be purchased at your local campus bookstore or directly from Wolfram Research.

Q: I'm looking for a program that I can learn and grow with. Will Mathematica for Students be the answer?
We think you'll find that Mathematica for Students has the diversity and power you are looking for to benefit not only your studies but also your career. Mathematica for Students has helped thousands of students to understand better the concepts of their technical courses. Mathematica is used at all Fortune 50 companies, by top-ranked universities, and in thousands of corporations and organizations worldwide.

Q: How do I purchase Mathematica for Students?
To purchase Mathematica for Students, proof of enrollment in an accredited educational institution is required. A valid student ID is the standard proof provided. Q: I'm interested in installing Mathematica for Students in a lab at a university or college. Can I purchase Mathematica for Students for this?
No, you cannot. Mathematica for Students is for use by enrolled students to install on their own personal computers.

However, Wolfram Research offers many options for purchasing or leasing Mathematica and other Wolfram Research products for educational labs, departments, or entire campuses. Please contact us or your local reseller for more information.

Q: How can I get a new password?
If you have already registered and obtained a password but unexpectedly need to get a new one, it is possible that your MathID number has changed. Your MathID number may change if your hard drive has been reconfigured or significantly altered. To request a new password, please send email to customerservice@wolfram.com. It is important to include the following information to help expedite your password request.

  • Your Mathematica license number
  • Your new MathID number
  • The changes that were made to your machine before a new password was needed

Even if you submit your password request after our regular office hours, a new password will still be sent to you as quickly as possible.

Q: I need Mathematica for only one or two classes. Are there any time-limited versions of Mathematica for Students available for purchase?
Yes, Wolfram Research now offers semester and annual editions of Mathematica for Students. These time-limited download versions of Mathematica for Students are available only through our web store. You will need to provide proof of enrollment in an accredited educational institution to purchase one of these products, and the product license will expire six months or one year from the date of registration.

Q: As a part-time student am I eligible to purchase the student version?
Yes, Wolfram Research does offer Mathematica for Students to part-time students. If you are working towards a degree at an accredited educational institution and are using Mathematica in one of your courses, you are eligible to register the student version. If you are enrolled at least part-time and taking a course that recommends Mathematica, you are also eligible to register the student version.

In both of these situations, you must contact Wolfram Research directly to obtain your password. Please be prepared to provide Wolfram Research with documentation of your student status. It is also helpful if you provide information regarding the number of credit hours you are currently taking, what degrees you have already earned, and what courses you are taking that require Mathematica.

For more details about eligibility, please contact us.

Q: As a professor, faculty member, or staff member, I need to evaluate the software that students use. Can I purchase Mathematica for Students for this?
No, you cannot since Mathematica for Students is for use by enrolled students to install on their own personal computers. However, Wolfram Research has a number of methods of providing Mathematica to professors, faculty, and staff members for evaluation purposes. If you are interested in evaluating Mathematica, please contact us for more details.

Q: I have a previous version of Mathematica for Students. Can I upgrade?
Yes, you can upgrade if you are still a student and meet the eligibility requirements to purchase a student version.
