Guidelines for Submitting Notebooks to arXiv.org

arXiv.org is an electronic archive and distribution server for research papers. Areas on arXiv cover physics and related disciplines, mathematics, nonlinear sciences, computational linguistics, and neuroscience. Last year, over 30 thousand papers were submitted and an estimated 15 million preprints were downloaded from arXiv and its mirror sites.

arXiv.org, the e-print server hosted by Los Alamos National Laboratory, now accepts notebook submissions. Authors can submit notebooks as supplemental materials or as an entire article. Notebooks can be created with Mathematica or Publicon, and they can be viewed with Mathematica or Publicon.

To ensure readability of notebook submissions for a wide audience, please follow these guidelines when submitting notebooks to arXiv.

  • Use standard fonts: Times, Courier, Helvetica, and the Math fonts that come with Mathematica.
The arXiv script that converts notebooks to different formats will not work with other fonts.

  • Choose the smallest picture format for any images.
Small images result in faster downloads and, consequently, greater accessibility to your work. Depending on the image and the type of bitmapping chosen, bitmap images are usually smaller than PostScript images. However, when image quality is critical, remember that PostScript images look better than bitmap images in PostScript and PDF files. Mathematica's native bitmap format is platform independent. To convert an image to a Mathematica bitmap, select the image, and then select Bitmap from the Convert To option in the Cell menu.

  • Do not include platform-specific bitmap formats, such as Windows Metafile or Macintosh PICT.
After importing a non-PostScript graphic, such as JPEG or GIF, into your notebook, convert the graphic to a Mathematica bitmap.

  • Remove unnecessary animations.
    Animations greatly increase file size.

  • Do not include platform-specific objects.
For example, if you use Windows, do not include OLE objects in your notebook.

  • Use a commercially released version of Mathematica Version 3 or later.
The arXiv script that converts notebooks into different formats will not work with other versions.

  • Embed either the arXiv style sheet or the default style sheet in the notebook.
To embed a style sheet, select "Edit Style Sheet..." from the Format menu; then click "Import Private Copy". You can also use a customized style sheet. However, note that customized style sheets may not work with the arXiv script, and notebooks using these style sheets may not be viewable to all people who browse arXiv.

  • Indicate that your submission is a notebook when completing the Comments field on the arXiv submission form.
arXiv users with access to Mathematica will know that they can run the calculations in your submission.

Additional file submission guidelines and information are available on arXiv.
