Deliver richer, more engaging content and assess students' understanding more deeply. Wolfram EdTech uniquely integrates chat and large language model (LLM) technology with comprehensive STEM computation and real-world computable data for all school subjects—enabling new levels of learning engagement, automation for assessment and richness of courseware at low cost.
While recent developments in chat and natural language AI are revolutionary, they are not a classroom solution on their own. Their tendency to invent false information, stray off-topic and bring their own assumptions and biases into the conversation present a risk in unfiltered deployment. Wolfram has worked with all the main LLM providers to create tools to control and direct AI models, ensure accuracy and provide context.
Combine the fluency of LLMs with the accuracy and reproducibility of Wolfram computation to create chat apps or narratives that can be trusted. Use the Wolfram Knowledgebase or your own databases to drive narrative without LLMs inventing content to fill the gaps.
Control AI content
Use prompt-engineering tools to tune the parameters for conversational interaction. Set an AI persona, choose what topics to cover and the level of help to provide, and set up guardrails to control inappropriate language or content.
The promise of personalized tutoring
LLMs now provide the capability to generate on-demand explanations and conversational tutoring sessions. Wolfram's LLM technology makes it possible to tailor conversations with information about the student, their knowledge, attainment and other computed context so as to create more relevant interactions.
Assessment Technologies Escape from multiple choice
Automated content generation technology makes it easier to author questions that contain equations, diagrams, graphs, images or interactive content, even when the questions have been generated algorithmically or through chat.
Do you have to manually write every question?
Algorithmic problem generation can create an almost infinite number of unique questions from a single template. Together with Wolfram's question bank management tools, you can quickly specify a new quiz that is different for every pupil in the class. Unlike tools that try to achieve this by simply choosing questions from a pool, Wolfram's computational understanding of the subjects can generate entirely new questions whilst ensuring that they are meaningful and solvable.
Can you use the full range of question interface types?
Automated content generation technology makes it easier to author questions that contain equations, diagrams, graphs, images or interactive content, even when the questions have been algorithmically generated.
Can your platform understand the student?
As well as helping you to support a wide range of common answer interfaces, Wolfram technology helps to address a key problem that causes so much digital assessment to be multiple choice—how to understand what the student means.
Wolfram natural language processing and LLM technology can understand context-dependent synonyms and short-form answers from hundreds of domains of knowledge. In math and STEM subjects, 2D typesetting tools can allow students to enter equations as they would be written on paper.
Can you match the student answer and the real answer across all STEM domains?
The other reason why multiple-choice questions dominate digital assessment is that knowing if a student answer and the expected answer are the same (or close enough) is difficult. Wolfram technology can solve that problem for you. As well as its domain-specific synonym knowledge, Wolfram technology understands relationships and related computations across many domains.
Some examples of how Wolfram intelligence enables higher fidelity assessments:
- In chemistry, as well as knowing seven synonyms for benzene, it knows that it's not an alkane but is an aromatic (and is one of the 142 isomers of "C6H6").
- In history, it knows that borders of countries and empires are different on different dates.
- In biology, it doesn't just know that the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone; it knows the connectivity of every part of the human body and what each part looks like!
- In mathematics, it can determine if an answer is the same as or close enough to the expected answer, even when the answer can be expressed in a large number of ways. For example, 1 + 2x + x2 could also be expressed as x2 + 2x + 1, 2x + x2 + 1, x2 + 2x + 1 or (x+1)2 or in many other ways.
Wolfram natural language and LLM technology can also extract and assess factual claims made in essay format answers.
Does your assessment platform handle all the analysis and reporting you need?
The Wolfram technology stack also provides all the data science tools you need to analyze the data that your platform generates, whether that is setting grade boundaries, calibrating question difficulty, looking for correlations between cohorts or optimizing your sales and marketing processes.
As well as providing statistical, time series and clustering tools for analyzing what has happened, powerful machine learning (AI) tools are available for creating predictive models from complex data. Potential applications include adaptive assessment and content that asks the best question or provides the best exercises tailored to the individual student's current state of understanding.
All this analysis can be deployed as live dashboards, automatically generated reports or individualized messages.
Working with Wolfram|Alpha to develop a math solver is a natural expansion of our learning ecosystem, combining Wolfram's computational knowledge and academic credibility with Bartleby's already robust solution set... adding functionality that can meet the urgent demand for the support students require in this subject area.
-Michael P. Huseby, CEO and Chairman, Barnes & Noble Education
[We] have been yearning for something that would bring our subject alive and move beyond the textual content we normally find… It's hard to imagine how a book like this would be brought alive without Mathematica.
-Eric Schultz, Math Instructor & Author, Walla Walla Community College
Working with Wolfram Consulting Services, our new MOLS system enables us to ask the questions we want, that students can answer intuitively and that we can expand out to other topics, without being restricted by the technology.

Courseware Technologies That Enable Computational Creativity
If you are building EdTech, then Wolfram can help you go further, faster with a range of technologies for creating and interacting with courseware across all STEM and computational X subjects.
Watching Isn't Learning
Watching isn't learning! Wolfram provides a range of technology that can enable your platform to support open-ended interactive content across STEM and computational X subjects.
Wolfram Notebooks let students access information or calculations using natural language, typeset math, or add images, notes and interactive content. Computed results and feedback such as step-by-step solutions that are specifically generated in response to student input are much more useful than static, prewritten solutions to generic problems.
Support for offline or cloud editing and editable sharing between other students for collaborative projects and with teachers for review and feedback make all kinds of study, homework or project workflows possible. With full programmatic access, you can build Wolfram Notebooks right into your platform.

Automated knowledge-based content generation
In STEM and other computational subjects, technical content is the most expensive part of content creation, but Wolfram's computational tools make it easy to generate diagrams, exercises and solutions automatically. Because content is generated programmatically, you can inject content that is tailored to an individual student's needs or even in response to their questions.
Scalable content production
A key step toward efficient courseware creation, at scale, is to be able to generate and format content programmatically from data or source text. A complete symbolic representation of documents, including interactive content, together with Wolfram's symbolic transformation language allow you to generate documents with different content, in different styles, for different deployments and in different formats according to any rules you want.
Ready-to-use content—from components to courses
Wolfram has a range of ready-to-license courseware content from interactive learning objects to complete courses backed by a writing team who is ready to customize or create new content for your needs.
